Arlington, VA – Last month, local resident Craig Esherick was honored as a Hall of Famer at his high school alma mater, Springbrook High School in Silver Spring. This recognition took place during a special dinner ceremony on October 19 at Argyle Country Club. The event celebrated Esherick’s exceptional contributions to boys basketball as one of nine inductees.
Esherick, a graduate of Springbrook from the class of 1974, expressed his gratitude for his time at the school. “I feel very lucky to have played for Springbrook and for good coaches along the way,” he shared. “It was so much fun, with great memories.”
During his time at Springbrook, Esherick was known for being a strong outside shooter. He earned a spot on both the all-county and all-state teams and was recognized as all-Met by local newspapers like The Washington Post. In his senior season, Esherick averaged 18 points per game, showcasing his scoring talent with a career-high of 38 points in one game and 26 points in his final contest, which ended in a semifinal loss during the Maryland state tournament.
Esherick played a crucial role in helping the Blue Devils clinch county championships and reaching the state tournament during his sophomore, junior, and senior years. His skills on the court earned him a scholarship to play basketball at Georgetown University, where he continued his career for four seasons and graduated in 1978. After college, he served as an assistant coach at Georgetown before becoming the head coach.
In 2022, Esherick was also inducted into the Arlington Sports Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Theo Stamos, a former Commonwealth’s Attorney, are proud parents of two sons, both of whom played basketball for Yorktown High School.
