St. Mary Catholic Tennis Duo Wins State Championship

MADISON – The tennis courts at Nielsen Tennis Stadium buzzed with excitement on Saturday as Vivie Auth and Adel Schneider of St. Mary Catholic celebrated a remarkable achievement. The duo capped off an undefeated season by claiming the WIAA Division 2 state championship in doubles. The pair, who entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed, wrapped up their season with an impressive 31-0 record.

In the championship match, Auth and Schneider decisively defeated Natalie Cooper and Lauren Loesl from Pacelli with a score of 6-0, 6-3. Their road to the championship was filled with strong performances, including a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Maria Elizabeth Garcia and Akosua Yeboah from Columbus Catholic in the semifinals. After receiving a bye in the first round, the pair won four consecutive matches in straight sets, showcasing their dominance throughout the tournament.

The excitement at the state finals extended beyond doubles, as Clare Schaefer from Whitefish Bay won the Division 1 singles title, overcoming McKenna Thorson of Verona with a score of 6-4, 6-2. Lexie Hankel from West De Pere captured third place in Division 1 singles after defeating Angela Wang from University School of Milwaukee in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Khali and Alexia Stephens from Bay Port took home third place in Division 1 after their win over Ana and Maria Cristescu from De Pere, 6-3, 6-2. The championship title went to Sarah Neubert and Isabella Heidenberger of Arrowhead, who triumphed over Abby Frasher and Amelia Stuckslager of Divine Savior Holy Angels in a closely contested match that ended with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 12-10.

The tennis excitement was just one part of a busy sports weekend, as the local community celebrated talented young athletes across various sports and events.

Cross Country Championships: New London and Shawano Shine

Switching gears to cross country, DE PERE also hosted a thrilling championship day. New London emerged as the boys’ champions, racking up a total of 48 points and beating West De Pere by just six points. Logan Boehnlein from Seymour was the top individual finisher, clocking in at 16:51.2.

On the girls’ side, Shawano claimed the championship with a score of 36 points, outperforming West De Pere, which finished with 65 points. Kate Schmoll from West De Pere was the individual winner for girls, finishing in 20:11.8.

This weekend’s events showcased outstanding skill and sportsmanship among high school athletes, leaving fans excited for the upcoming seasons and competitions.
