Deputy Injured in Serious Incident Outside Lexington County Sheriff’s Department

In a startling event that unfolded on Tuesday in Lexington, a deputy from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department was seriously injured while attempting to apprehend a suspect. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Antwan Martel Jeter, allegedly ran over the deputy with a car while trying to flee from the scene.

The Incident Unfolds

The dramatic incident occurred around 4 p.m. outside the sheriff’s department headquarters. Jeter was at the department to complete a mandatory court-ordered registration as a sex offender when, during the registration process, it came to light that he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. This discovery quickly escalated the situation.

Upon being approached by deputies regarding the warrant, Jeter did not comply and instead made a dash for his car. A struggle ensued between Jeter and the law enforcement officers as they attempted to apprehend him. In what can only be described as a reckless move, Jeter backed up his vehicle and careened over one of the deputies, causing significant concern.

Aftermath of the Incident

Fortunately, the injured deputy was taken to an area hospital. Although details about his condition have yet to be disclosed fully, police reports indicate that his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported during this chaotic encounter.

Quick Search and Arrest

After Jeter fled the scene, both police officers and sheriff’s deputies launched a thorough search throughout the area, checking various locations linked to the suspect. The relentless efforts to find him paid off later that night when Jeter was apprehended at a family member’s home on Allaire Ct S, located between Longtown Road and Interstate 77.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Following his arrest, Jeter was hit with several serious charges, including assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, assault on a law enforcement officer while resisting arrest, hit-and-run with great bodily injury, and malicious injury to property. As of now, Jeter is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center without bond, with jail records confirming his current status.

It is also important to note that additional charges are expected to be filed against Jeter by the sheriff’s department as the situation evolves. The public is encouraged to remain informed on this developing situation, as it has certainly caught the attention of many in the community.

What’s Next?

As we await further updates, the incident raises significant questions about public safety and the challenges law enforcement faces day in and day out. It also brings to light the critical situation surrounding the registration processes for sex offenders, a sensitive topic that continues to affect many communities.

In the spirit of transparency, authorities have committed to keeping the community updated as new information comes to light regarding both the deputy’s recovery and Jeter’s legal circumstances.

This ongoing investigation is a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers take every day to protect and serve their communities. The Lexington County community stands behind its deputies, hoping for a quick recovery for the injured officer and justice for all involved.
