High School Football in California Faces Uncertainty as CalPreps Closes Down

Calpreps.com Shuts Down, Leaving High School Sports Fans and Administrators Concerned

In a surprising turn of events, the well-known Calpreps.com has announced its closure, leaving high school sports enthusiasts across California and the nation wondering about the impact on local teams and postseason selections. Calpreps has been a leading source of high school sports data for over two decades, providing schedules, scores, ratings, and projections primarily for football.

On its website, Calpreps.com revealed the decision to cease operations, which leaves many fans and administrators without access to the crucial data they’ve relied on for so long. This sudden change could complicate the postseason selection processes for various states, as numerous state associations depend on Calpreps rankings for seeding playoff teams.

For instance, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), the governing body for high school sports in California, often uses these data points. CIF Executive Director, Ron Nocetti, expressed his surprise upon learning the news. “We’re going to take time to assess the situation and talk with appropriate parties and make decisions from there,” he stated. Nocetti acknowledged that the CIF has multiple guidelines for seeding teams and is prepared to adapt.

California is divided into 10 sections for its high school sports, with the Southern Section being the largest, consisting of around 600 schools. Assistant Commissioner Thom Simmons emphasized that they have had backup plans for situations like this. “We have never relied on one outlet for these playoff divisions,” he said, reassuring fans and administrators that alternative measures are in place.

As the landscape of high school sports adjusts to this sudden loss of data, teams and fans alike are left wondering how this will affect playoff preparations and selections going forward. The CIF’s commitment to finding a solution along with the Southern Section’s backup plans may help maintain some level of consistency as they navigate this unexpected hurdle.
