Chapin High School Staff Experience Lightheadedness from Backpack Incident
CHAPIN, S.C. – A situation at Chapin High School on Wednesday raised concerns among students, staff, and parents after several staff members reported feeling lightheaded while examining a backpack. The incident took place around 11:30 a.m., when a school resource officer (SRO) discovered the unattended backpack left in a classroom.
Details of the Incident
Principal Ed Davis sent an email the following morning, explaining that the SRO began searching through the backpack and soon felt chest pains and shortness of breath. Following this, multiple staff members began to feel dizzy and light-headed, prompting the school to take swift action.
Authorities Respond
In response to the situation, Chapin High School notified local authorities, which included the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Lexington Fire Department, and the Lexington County Hazardous Materials Unit. At around 1 p.m., the Hazardous Materials Unit examined the backpack and found no hazardous materials or substances inside.
Employee Health Updates
By approximately 1:45 p.m., the school received an all-clear status, allowing staff to return to regular activities. The SRO and all staff members who had been involved in examining the backpack received on-site medical attention and were cleared to continue their work.
Clarification on Fentanyl Rumors
In his email, Principal Davis mentioned that there were circulating rumors in the community suggesting possible fentanyl exposure on campus. However, he firmly stated that there are no verified reports, police accounts, or evidence indicating that anyone was exposed to fentanyl or any dangerous substances.
Unrelated Medical Emergency
In addition to the backpack incident, there was a separate occurrence at the school where Emergency Medical Services (EMS) had to respond to a student facing a medical emergency. No further details about the student involved have been released.
As the community processed the events of the day, Principal Davis emphasized that the source of the rumors regarding fentanyl is currently unknown, and reassured everyone that the school is committed to the safety and health of its students and staff.
