Chapin, S.C. – Medical Incident at Chapin High School Raises Concerns

A recent incident at Chapin High School has stirred unease among students, staff, and parents. On Wednesday morning, a school resource officer (SRO) experienced health issues while searching a backpack left in a classroom. The situation has sparked rumors regarding potential fentanyl exposure.

What Happened

According to a statement from Principal Ed Davis, the SRO began searching the backpack around 11:30 a.m. During the examination, the officer reported feeling chest pains and shortness of breath. Following this, several other staff members also reported experiencing dizziness and light-headedness after coming into contact with the bag.

In response to the situation, school officials quickly involved emergency services. Authorities from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Lexington Fire Department, and the Lexington County Hazardous Materials Unit were notified. The Hazardous Materials Unit arrived to test the backpack around 1 p.m., and after assessing the situation, they found no hazardous materials present.

All-Clear Status

By 1:45 p.m., Chapin High School received the all-clear status. The SRO and affected staff received medical attention and were cleared to return to their duties shortly thereafter. In a separate and unrelated incident, emergency medical services responded to a medical emergency involving a student, but no further details have been released regarding that case.

Response to Rumors

In his email to the community, Principal Davis addressed the swirling rumors about potential fentanyl exposure. He stated that there are no reports or evidence from local authorities suggesting that anyone had been exposed to dangerous substances such as fentanyl. Davis emphasized that the school is unsure where these rumors originated and reassured parents that no one was in danger.

The events at Chapin High School serve as a reminder of the importance of clear communication during emergencies. School officials are urging community members to seek reliable information before jumping to conclusions during such situations.

As the school continues to prioritize the safety of its students and staff, officials encourage parents and community members to remain calm and informed.
