City of Columbia Hosts Book Drive for “Little Libraries” Initiative Launch

One City, Many Books

The city of Columbia, renowned for its rich culture and community spirit, has embarked on another journey to promote literacy amongst young minds. This time, the city is engaging the community with a novel approach: a book drive to foster their newly announced “Little Libraries” initiative.

Initiative Overview

Set in motion under the umbrella of the Columbia Streams Art public art program, this initiative aims to disperse a network of captivating book boxes across the city. These boxes, designed to be convenient sources of books for children and families alike, also instill an appreciation for the sharing culture. The city officials foster the principle of the “take one, leave one” method to imbibe a sense of community and knowledge sharing among the young residents.

Drive Dates

The book drive, which is due to run from Thursday, July 11, through Wednesday, July 31, is an invitation for all residents to donate gently used books for children and young adults. Contributing to this cause, citizens will pave the way for the launch of Little Libraries by providing a strong foundation of books for the first phase of implementation.

Donation Points

For those eager to participate in this charitable initiative, the city has designated convenient donation spots throughout the city. The primary collection point is situated at the City of Columbia City Hall, located at 1737 Main Street, welcoming all book donations, from fables to academic books.

Little Libraries Set Up

In an impressive display of creativity, youthful participants from the local youth groups of the City of Columbia Parks have been busy transforming up-cycled newspaper boxes into charming Little Libraries. Scheduled to be launched across North Columbia in August, these Little Libraries are sure to adorn the city with their inventiveness while propagating literacy.

Embrace Shared Learning

This project represents an admirable effort by the city to advocate learning and literacy among children and families. By enabling easy access to a diverse range of books and preserving the spirit of the “take one, leave one” practice, the city is committing to a sustainable form of shared learning.

Let’s Join Hands

With the launch of the ‘Little Libraries’ initiative, the city of Columbia is calling on all its residents to contribute to this community-based effort. With every book donated, we take one step closer to a more literate, community-driven society that values the power of books and the shared knowledge they bring.
