Person of Interest Arrested for Attempted Rape Case in Central Park: Sources
Suspect Held in Custody as Investigation Continues
A person of interest has been taken into custody by police in relation to the attempted sexual assault of a woman sunbathing in Central Park, according to official sources. It should be noted that the suspect had already been detained on a separate forcible touching case when new findings linked him to the Central Park case.
Suspect Fascinatingly Linked to Crime through DNA
Investigators have not yet disclosed the name of the suspect, who, at this stage of the investigation, has not been officially charged in the attempted assault which took place on June 24. However, DNA evidence reportedly connects him to the crime.
The Assault Incident
On the day of the incident, the 21-year-old victim was said to be alone and sunbathing in the Great Hill section of the park. A man approached her around 1:30 p.m. and exposed himself. According to New York Police Department Chief of Patrol, “When she screamed and took off running, the man tackled her from behind and attempted to sexually assault her.” Fortunately, the victim managed to fight off her attacker successfully, leading him to flee the scene.
Prompt Efforts of NYPD
The New York Police Department swiftly released a sketch of the alleged attacker three days after the incident, on June 27. The suspect has been described as a Black man in his 30s with curly hair, of medium build and approximately 6 feet tall.
Assessing Safety in Central Park
As police continue their investigation, officials emphasized that prior to this incident, there have been no known patterns for sexual assault in Central Park. Deputy Commissioner Tarik Sheppard called the park “one of the most iconic locations in the world” for residents and tourists alike, reiterating the ongoing efforts to ensure its safety.
Continuing Investigation and Assurance of Justice
The investigation into the assault is ongoing. Police are urging anyone with additional information about the assault or the alleged assailant to come forward. Authorities assure that they are working diligently and relentlessly to secure justice for the victim and ensure the safety of all park-goers.
