RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — University of South Carolina Renames College of Engineering and Computing After $30 Million Gift from Alumnus

On Thursday, the University of South Carolina renamed the College of Engineering and Computing following a $30 million gift from an alumnus. The naming ceremony occurred at 10 am at the Swearingen Engineering Center. The college is now officially known as the University of South Carolina Molinaroli College of Engineering and Computing.

A Family Legacy

The Molinaroli family has strong ties to South Carolina and a deep commitment to the university’s future and Palmetto State. Seven family members graduated from USC since the 1930s, and another family member will begin their journey in the fall. Their engineering impact ranges from the Charleston Navy Yard to SCDOT and Johnson Controls.

Generous Investment

The investment was initiated by 1983 alumnus Alex Molinaroli and his wife Kristin. It will be used to establish the college as a leading educational and research institution throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast and a driving force behind the state’s economic growth. USC President Michael Amiridis expressed gratitude at Thursday’s event for this extraordinary gift.

New Era for the College

“With this extraordinary gift from Alex and Kristin Molinaroli, we are embarking on a new era for the College of Engineering and Computing,” said Amiridis. “Their generous commitment will empower the college to enhance its academic stature and explore its fullest potential for exceptional education, research, workforce development, and economic impact in South Carolina and beyond.”

Legacy of Giving

This marks the fourth academic building named after a donor at the university. The Darla Moore School of Business, the Arnold School of Public Health, and the Joseph F. Rice School of Law are among the previous named buildings after notable alumni and donors.
