Columbia Historic Preservation Consultant Recognized for Award-Winning Work

Historic preservation consultant Janie Campbell, a 2016 public history graduate, has been awarded for her exceptional work in helping developers preserve historic buildings in Columbia, South Carolina. Campbell, who initially had low expectations of her career path, has found great success in her current role at the Columbia law firm Rogers Lewis, where she assists clients in utilizing historic preservation tax credits.

Unexpected Path

Despite her initial doubts about finding a career in historic preservation, Campbell’s journey led her to USC, where she discovered her passion for historic buildings. Working closely with her mentor Bob Weyeneth, she delved deep into South Carolina’s rich history and architectural heritage, gaining invaluable experience and knowledge.

Immersion in Community

Through field trips to Charleston and architectural history classes at USC, Campbell developed a deep appreciation for preservation and modern architecture. Her experiences at Historic Columbia and encounters with influential figures like Robert Lewis further solidified her path in historic preservation.

Preservation Leadership

Campbell’s work with Lewis on numerous projects, including the restoration of the Whaley House in downtown Columbia, has earned her the 2024 Preservation Leadership Award from Historic Columbia. Her team’s successful utilization of federal historic tax credits on 85 projects in South Carolina showcases her expertise and dedication to preserving the state’s architectural heritage.

From revitalizing mid-century motels in Myrtle Beach to transforming historic residences in Charleston, Campbell’s diverse portfolio highlights the transformative power of preservation. Her commitment to preserving community landmarks and promoting a sense of place has garnered recognition and praise from colleagues and stakeholders.

Looking ahead, Campbell aims to explore opportunities where she can have a more significant role in building preservation projects, potentially taking on ownership stakes.
