Baseball Defeats Winthrop in Seven to Close Midweek Slate
Rock Hill, South Carolina – May 7, 2024
The University of South Carolina baseball team closed out the midweek portion of its schedule with a dominant 15-3, 7-inning victory over Winthrop on Tuesday night at the Winthrop Ballpark.
In the top of the first, Carolina quickly took the lead with three runs. Parker Noland drove in a run with a groundout, while Kennedy Jones added two more with a single through the left side. Winthrop answered back with a run in the bottom of the first, but Gavin Casas extended Carolina’s lead with a home run to the right gap.
Carolina continued to pour on the runs throughout the game. Casas scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning, and Talmadge LeCroy added another run with a squeeze bunt in the fifth. Austin Brinling then delivered a double to left center, scoring two more runs. Jones contributed his fifth RBI of the night with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
In the seventh inning, Carolina sealed the victory with three home runs. Brinling, Ethan Petry, and Cole Messina all went deep to secure the 15-3 win. Brinling finished the night 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs, while Jones had a season-high five RBIs.
On the mound, Tyler Dean picked up the win with 1.1 innings of hitless relief. Tyler Pitzer started the game and struck out four batters in two innings, and Michael Polk closed out the seventh inning with three strikeouts.
