Big Fourth Frame Lifts Baseball to Midweek Win over USC Upstate
GREENVILLE – The University of South Carolina baseball team showcased an outstanding performance on Tuesday night (March 19) at Fluor Field, defeating USC Upstate with a final score of 14-8. The highlight of the game was a remarkable nine-run fourth inning that propelled the Gamecocks to victory.
Game Highlights
The Gamecocks took control early on, with Cole Messina launching his eighth home run of the year in the first inning. USC Upstate responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, but Carolina quickly answered back, led by Parker Noland’s timely single that brought in two runs.
However, the real turning point came in the fourth inning when Carolina exploded offensively, scoring 10 runs. Triples from Kennedy Jones and Blake Jackson, combined with Ethan Petry’s eighth home run of the season, helped the Gamecocks establish a commanding 10-2 lead. The team capitalized on three USC Upstate errors and successfully executed four stolen bases in this inning.
Despite USC Upstate’s attempt to rally with six runs in the sixth inning, Carolina’s pitching held strong. Chris Veach stepped up to shut down the opposing team and secure the win. Garrett Gainey sealed the deal in the ninth inning with two strikeouts.

Cole Messina had a standout game, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and a home run. Blake Jackson contributed three RBIs, while Ethan Petry, Parker Noland, Blake Jackson, and Evan Stone each added two hits to the team’s impressive offensive display. Tyler Pitzer was credited with the win in relief, delivering two hitless innings.

Ethan Petry’s home run in the game brought his career total to 31, tying him for 20th in Carolina’s history. Cole Messina matched his career-high four hits in a single game, a feat he last accomplished against USC Upstate in 2023. The Gamecocks have now scored a total of 33 runs in their last two matchups against USC Upstate in Greenville.
