Chapin, South Carolina

Richard Ouzts, a well-respected family man, athletic enthusiast, and community leader, passed away recently at the age of 57. Born on June 21, 1966, in Columbia, South Carolina, he is remembered for his dedication to his family, passion for athletics, and significant contributions to the community. A private gathering is scheduled for November 9th, followed by a public drop-in at Chapin High School’s press box from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Memorials may be made to the Chapin Eagle Club in his memory.

Growing up in Irmo after moving from Orangeburg in first grade, Richard displayed natural athletic abilities from an early age, joining the Cold Stream Swim Club even before he learned to swim. He graduated from Irmo High School in the Class of 1985 where he was a standout athlete in both football and track, earning a football scholarship to Mars Hill College. Unfortunately, an injury cut his football career short, leading him to transfer to Winthrop College.

At Winthrop, Richard not only earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1990 but also became involved in fraternity life, serving as president of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. After graduation, he launched a successful career in sales, working with Fortune 500 companies and held several national sales roles where he was known for his drive and professionalism. Most recently, he worked with BSN Sports, allowing him to blend his love for athletics with his professional skills.

Richard married Jenny on May 16, 1998, and together they created a loving home centered on family values. He was devoted to his two daughters, Claire and Sally, who were the light of his life. As a proud “girl dad,” he became actively involved in their lives, often surprising them with gifts from the American Girl store during his sales trips. His daughters, inspired by Richard’s competitive spirit, both became accomplished swimmers, with one joining the Division I swim team at Georgia Southern University. Richard frequently attended swim meets, cheering them on from the sidelines and nurturing their talents.

Even after his daughters graduated, Richard continued to engage with Chapin athletics, serving on the Eagle Club Board to support athletic programs at Chapin High School. He became known as a color commentator for CSPN, showcasing his enthusiasm and dedication to research in sports broadcasting. He also became a recognizable figure in the community, hosting neighborhood events and creating impressive Halloween displays that garnered attention.

With a deep passion for all Carolina Gamecock athletics, especially football, Richard cherished family game days at Williams-Brice Stadium, where he held season tickets that created lasting memories. His legacy is one of boundless energy, competitive spirit, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. Richard is survived by his wife, Jenny; daughters Claire and Sally; sister Idessa Hair; brother Kenn Ouzts; numerous in-laws; and extended family, while he was predeceased by his parents, Ferrell and Rita Ouzts.
