Chapin, SC – Samuel Dillard Mathias, affectionately known as “Sammie/Sam,” passed away on Monday, August 11, 2025, at the age of 74 following a brief illness. His death has brought a wave of mourning across his community in Chapin and the surrounding areas of Columbia, SC.
Born on May 1, 1951, in Columbia, SC, Mathias was the youngest son of the late David “Jack” and Margaret C. Mathias. He graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1969 and subsequently joined the Air Force Reserves, where he served his country honorably. After high school, he became a prominent figure in his family business, ultimately taking over as the owner and operator of Mathias Sandwich Shop, which has been a staple in the community. His dedication to working daily at the shop was a testament to his commitment to providing for his family and serving the Town of Irmo.
In addition to his role in the family business, Mathias was a passionate fan of the South Carolina Gamecocks and an active member of the Gamecock Club. He loved attending football games, often considering trips to Tennessee for games as his “vacations.” He cherished the peace and joy found at his home on Lake Murray, spending time fishing, boating, and enjoying home projects. Mathias also participated in short camping trips around the state as a member of a local camping club.
Mathias is survived by his wife of 30 years, Lisa Cook Mathias, and his children: daughters Heather Mathias Davis and Sharon Ashley Mathias, son Samuel Ryan Mathias (Meagan), and step-son James “Jimmy” Leslie Hardee (Marlena). He was a proud grandfather to six grandsons: Chase Watson Davis, Mattox Christopher Davis, Bradyn “Brady” Pierce Davis, Dylan Michael Upton, Nickolas Avery Hinton, and Jackson Everett Hardee. He is also survived by his brother William “Willie” Covil Mathias (Bonnie), several nieces and nephews, and two beloved puppies, Ashley and Bobby Boucher (Boo-shay).
Mathias was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Mathias Boland, his brother, David James Mathias, Jr., and several other family members, including nephews William Christopher Herron-Stowell, Jack Mathias Herron, David James Mathias, III, and his son-in-law, Brian Christopher Davis.
Memorial Services
Visitation for Samuel Dillard Mathias will take place on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel in Irmo, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, August 15, 2025, at Redeemer Lutheran Church located at 525 St. Andrews Rd. The service will commence at 1:00 p.m. and will be officiated by the Reverend Gary Loadholt and the Reverend Amanda Burke. Following the service, burial will take place at Bush River Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to either Redeemer Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
