Chapin, SC – Lorene Elizabeth Eargle Cannon, a cherished member of the local community, passed away on July 19, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on January 17, 1943, Lorene was the daughter of the late James M. Eargle and Louise Chapman Eargle. Her legacy will be honored through a funeral service scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, at 2 p.m. at St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will take place in the church’s Fellowship Hall one hour prior to the service.
During her lifetime, Lorene was an active participant in her church community, dedicating considerable time to teaching Sunday School for approximately 20 years. She originally started in the nursery when her children were young and progressed to teaching kindergarten, eventually working with 1st and 2nd graders. Lorene also served two terms on the church council, contributing as secretary of the Call Committee and chairperson for several other committees, showcasing her commitment to the congregation.
Lorene graduated from Chapin High School in 1961 and furthered her education by attending Columbia Commercial College. After completing her studies, she embarked on a long career at Palmetto Health Richland, where she dedicated 38 years before retiring.
Her personal life was enriched by her varied interests, including spending time at the beach and mountains, gardening, and cooking for her family. These activities reflected her nurturing spirit and love for connection with family and nature. Lorene is survived by her two sons, James C. Boland (Rachel) and Steven R. Cannon (Renee), both residing in Irmo. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Samantha Furr (Corey), Kristen Cannon, Courtney Cannon, Wesley Boland, and Jessica Griffith, as well as five great-grandchildren.
Lorene was the last surviving member of nine siblings and was the only girl among them. She was predeceased by her eight brothers: John, B.L., Raymond, Dale, Leland, Travis, Lemuel, and Elton (Junebug) Eargle. Lorene’s life partner, Bruce Cannon, remains to honor her memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church, located at 844 Columbia Avenue, Chapin, SC 29036. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Throughout her life, Lorene Eargle Cannon touched the hearts of many in her community. Her dedication to her family, church, and friends will be remembered fondly by those she leaves behind.
