News Summary
The Diamond Devils Upperclass Scout Day at The University of South Carolina featured rigorous evaluations of high school baseball talent. Players undergo extensive pro-style workouts including speed tests, batting practice, and pitching performance assessments using advanced analytics. The event helps identify potential future stars and prepares athletes for competitive opportunities. Similar evaluations were held for younger prospects in May, demonstrating the Diamond Devils’ commitment to developing young talent in baseball.
Columbia, SC – The Diamond Devils Upperclass Scout Day took place on June 19th at The University of South Carolina, showcasing some of the top high school baseball prospects in the region. The event was designed to evaluate player talent through a rigorous pro-style workout that included various drills and the use of advanced analytics.
During the workout, all position players participated in a series of evaluations, including a 60-yard dash to assess speed, bullpens for pitchers which were meticulously tracked by TrackMan technology, defensive evaluations, and batting practice sessions that featured ball flight analysis. TrackMan captured every ball hit into fair territory during batting practice, providing crucial data on player performance.
The average exit velocity of players was calculated from the data collected during batting practice. This metric is important as it measures players’ capacity for generating hard contact consistently. In addition to exit velocity, TrackMan measured distances that each hit traveled and categorized them as ground balls, line drives, or fly balls, thereby adding depth to the performance analysis.
Previously, the Diamond Devils Underclass Scout Day was held on May 17th at James Island High School in Charleston, SC. This event mirrored many aspects of the Upperclass Scout Day, providing a platform for younger prospects to be evaluated in a similar manner. During the Underclass Scout Day, infielders carried out practice throws from various positions to improve their arm accuracy, while outfielders directed throws to home plate, with measurements taken with a radar gun to determine arm strength.
Catcher evaluations included simulated stolen base attempts, which involved multiple throws from behind home plate to second base for efficiency analysis. For pitchers, the controlled bullpens allowed them to showcase their full pitching arsenal, with velocity and spin rate data collected to assist in evaluating their potential.
On May 18th, multiple evaluation events took place at Southern Alamance High School in Graham, NC. Around 100 North Carolina prospects from two organizations participated in these workouts. The drills focused on both offensive evaluations—where traps data was captured for ball flight—and defensive performance, showcasing movement and strength in throwing.
As part of the evaluation process, players were also timed in the 60-yard dash, providing additional data to assess their overall athleticism. The evaluations conducted during these events serve as essential building blocks for players, as Prep Baseball intends to follow their progress through gameplay over the summer, fall, and into the spring of 2026.
Players who participate in these scout workouts have the opportunity to be added to the Prep Baseball rankings database, enhancing their visibility in the baseball community. Additionally, standout players may be considered for prestigious upcoming events such as the Future Games and NC/SC Border Battle, opening doors for further advancement in their baseball careers.
These events reflect the Diamond Devils’ commitment to fostering young baseball talent through advanced analytical techniques and comprehensive evaluation practices, which are crucial for developing players’ skills and ensuring they are prepared for higher levels of competition.
