Lexington – The Lexington Choral Society is set to host its annual Spring Sing concert, titled “Visions,” on May 4, 2025. This free concert will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Lexington, commencing at 3 p.m. The performance aims to deliver messages of belonging and acceptance through a carefully curated selection of music.

Under the direction of Ellen Peterson, the concert’s centerpiece will be a major work titled “A Vision Unfolding” composed by Kyle Pederson. In addition to this key composition, the program will showcase various other pieces that explore themes of dreams and aspirations for a more inclusive world. A unique aspect of the concert will be its integration of poetry, featuring works by renowned poets Langston Hughes and Shanelle Gabriael. The Rev. Arnetta Beverly from St. Stephen United Methodist Church will lend her voice as the narrator during this segment, adding depth and resonance to the overall presentation.

The concert will consist of five musical pieces and will run for approximately one hour. While admission to the event is free, attendees are encouraged to make voluntary donations to assist in funding future performances as well as support vocal scholarships for aspiring musicians.

During the concert, Stephen Stringer will accompany the choral performance on piano, enhancing the musical experience. Additionally, Jo Ann Poston Hill, the conductor emeritus and a founding member of the Lexington Women’s Choral Society, will also conduct a portion of the concert, showcasing her lasting impact on the community and the arts.

Established in the early 1980s, the Lexington Choral Society made a significant transition to include both men and women singers, previously only featuring female vocalists. This inclusion reflects the society’s commitment to diversity and unity within the musical community. Jo Ann Poston Hill served as a pivotal figure in this evolution until her retirement from the Lexington Choral Society in 2007.

The concert aims to promote a spirit of community and acceptance among individuals with differing beliefs. Peterson emphasizes that music can transcend everyday noise, serving as a unifying force that brings people together. The overarching goal of the event is to foster connections through the shared experience of music, demonstrating its power to inspire hope and dreams for an inclusive future.

As the Lexington Choral Society prepares for its performance, audiences can look forward to an enriching afternoon filled with beautiful music and thought-provoking poetry. This year’s Spring Sing “Visions” reflects the enduring mission of the organization to inspire and uplift the community through the art of choral performance.
