Traffic in Lexington affected by downed power line and construction.

News Summary

Recently, Lexington faced significant traffic disruptions due to a downed power line forcing the closure of South Street and I-64. The situation escalated as traffic redirected around repairs, affecting thousands of commuters. Meanwhile, construction on New Circle Road is adding to the congestion. Officials have confirmed no injuries and power has been restored for affected customers. Residents are advised to stay updated as conditions continue to change.

Power Line Troubles Create Traffic Headaches in Lexington

In the heart of Lexington, some unexpected challenges hit the streets as a downed power line caused significant disruptions to traffic over the past few days. The Lexington Police Department stepped in to announce the temporary closure of South Street due to a dangerously low hanging line. As safety always comes first, this closure was put in place to protect both motorists and pedestrians in the area.

Drivers navigating between Gibson Road and Glenway Avenue were advised to take alternative routes to avoid the affected stretch. In a twist of unfortunate events, this was just the tip of the iceberg as the situation escalated, leading to a complete shutdown of I-64 in both directions, causing major traffic jams for countless commuters.

What Happened on I-64?

The traffic woes on I-64 stemmed from the downed power line that stretched dangerously across the interstate. The closure affected drivers between exit 87 in Fayette County and exit 94 in Clark County. While the initial expectation was for the road to reopen around 2 p.m. on Thursday, conditions changed rapidly, and unfortunately, several lanes on the interstate had to remain closed.

By 4 p.m. on February 27, there was a glimmer of hope as the I-64 westbound exit ramp to Haley Road finally reopened. However, traffic had already been redirected away from the interstate due to the ongoing repairs and initial closures, causing frustration for drivers trying to navigate the area.

In an unfortunate side effect, the incident left approximately 5,500 customers without power, a number that fortunately has been restored since. The good news is that officials confirmed there were no injuries reported as a result of the fallen power line, which is a relief for families and commuters alike.

Construction Complications on New Circle Road

New Circle Road near Leestown Road. Planned construction began at 1 p.m., and the work includes closures affecting both Leestown Road and the outer loop of New Circle. For those needing to travel this route, be prepared for delays.

In a further development, complete road closures on both Leestown Road and New Circle Road will start at 10 p.m. and are expected to last until 5 a.m. on Friday. This phase of the project is a part of a larger New Circle Road widening venture, expected to wrap up by 2027 when the area will be much more accommodating to traffic.

Stay Tuned for Updates

As this story continues to develop, residents and drivers in Lexington are encouraged to stay informed about the latest updates as more information becomes available. For now, patience will be key, as the community works together to navigate through these unexpected challenges on the roads. Always remember, safety first seems constant for those traveling in the changes of Lexington’s bustling streets.
