Exciting WaterSC Listening Session Coming Up in West Columbia!
Hey there, West Columbia! Mark your calendars because there’s an important event happening on January 7th that every resident should pay attention to. The WaterSC listening session is set to take place at the Phillips Market Center, located at 117 Ballard Court. Whether you’re a passionate advocate for water conservation or just curious about local water issues, this is your chance to get involved!
What’s on the Agenda?
The fun starts with an open house at 4 p.m., where attendees can drop by and learn more about what WaterSC is all about. Then, at 6 p.m., there will be a public comment session. This is where folks can speak up and share their thoughts on how South Carolina should be managing its precious water resources. It’s not just a boring meeting – it’s a chance for you to voice your opinions and make a real difference!
Why Is Water Management Important?
Water resource management can feel like a complicated web of decisions, regulations, and interests. To tackle these challenges, Governor Henry McMaster issued an executive order last year to create WaterSC. This initiative aims to bring together different groups and individuals to find a balance between necessary economic activities like agriculture and manufacturing, while also caring for our environment. Smart water management is crucial for South Carolina, especially as we consider the impacts of mega-farms and housing developments.
The Water Resources Working Group, which was formed a while back on September 24, 2024, is hard at work crafting a comprehensive state water plan. This plan is focused on striking that delicate balance between economic needs and environmental concerns—something that affects everyone in the community!
Get Involved!
Your input can guide these discussions. Myra Reece, the Interim Director of the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES), is really looking forward to hearing from the public. If you can’t make it to the session in person, no worries! You can still participate by sending your thoughts via email to [email protected] or filling out an online form. Your views matter, and they can help shape the future of water management in our state!
