Columbia Prepares for Dazzling Fireworks Shows This Holiday Season

The city of Columbia is buzzing with excitement as the Columbia Fireflies announce their very first fireworks shows as part of the delightful Fireflies Holiday Lights event. Mark your calendars, because this festive spectacle is set to take place on December 20 and New Year’s Eve, and you won’t want to miss it!

Kickoff Fireworks Show on December 20

Get ready to be dazzled! The inaugural fireworks display in the history of the Fireflies Holiday Lights event will light up the sky on Friday, December 20, starting at 8:30 PM. Thanks to the talented folks at Munnerlyn Pyrotechnics, this much-anticipated event is sure to be a stunning way to celebrate the holiday season.

However, a little birdie suggests you might want to beat the rush. With December 20 falling on the Friday before Christmas, long lines at the Dukes Investigations Ticket Office are expected. To ensure your spot and avoid waiting in those long lines, consider purchasing your tickets in advance. It’s all about making your experience smooth and enjoyable!

A Special Kid’s Early New Year Celebration

As we count down to 2024, the Columbia Fireflies have planned a terrific offering for the little ones. On December 31, from 5 PM to 8 PM, families can participate in the Kid’s Early New Year Celebration. This delightful event will feature another fireworks show at 7:30 PM, giving the kids a taste of the festivities before bedtime. And yes, there’s sparkling cider included with admission, so you can raise a glass to the night!

Capital City Fireworks Display at Midnight

Once the clock strikes midnight, Columbia will be aglow with even more fireworks as the City of Columbia hosts its own Capital City Fireworks display, which kicks off shortly after midnight. For those planning to catch the best view, head to the north side of the State House at the intersection of Gervais and Main Streets — it’s the prime spot for a breathtaking view!

Plan Ahead for Road Closures on New Year’s Eve

If you’re venturing out on New Year’s Eve, keep in mind that the city has planned some road closures to accommodate the celebrations. South Main Street will close between Pendleton and College streets at 6 PM, remaining closed until 1:30 AM on January 1. Additionally, Pendleton and College Streets will also close between Assembly and Sumter streets starting at 11 PM.

Want to catch that fantastic fireworks display? Gervais Street along the north side of the State House will close starting at 11 PM for optimal viewing, reopening after the thrilling show.

Free Parking to Ease Your Celebration

To make your New Year’s Eve plans even easier, the city is offering free parking on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in select garages. The gates at the Lincoln, Park, Lady, and Sumter parking garages will be raised at 5 PM on December 31 and will revert to regular operations at 2 AM on January 2, 2025. Just think of it as the city’s little gift to help celebrate the new year!

Don’t Forget to Explore Local Spots

As you enjoy the festivities, don’t forget to stop by local restaurants and entertainment venues on New Year’s Eve. It’s a great way to support the community while having a fantastic time with family and friends.

So, Columbia, get ready to celebrate! With all the exciting events lined up, this holiday season is shaping up to be one of the most memorable yet. Gather your loved ones, grab your tickets early, and let’s ring in the festivities together in style!
