Cayce Police Department Faces Leadership Change as Chief Blake Resigns Unexpectedly

Cayce Police Department Experiences Leadership Shake-Up!

Cayce, a charming city nestled just west of Columbia, has hit the headlines with a significant shift in its police department leadership. Chief Herbert Blake has stepped down after just a few short months, leaving residents eager for answers and curious about what comes next.

Immediate Resignation Leaves Community Wondering

In a surprise announcement on Friday morning, the city of Cayce confirmed that Chief Blake’s resignation has been accepted, with his departure taking effect immediately. While the city has been tight-lipped regarding the specifics around Blake’s resignation, interim city manager Jim Crosland reassured the public that the police force remains strong and capable. “We have a senior command staff and a fully capable police force that will continue to serve our city and to keep our citizens safe,” Crosland stated in a press release.

There’s a sense of urgency in the air as Crosland hinted at an “immediate plan” to find the right leader for the Cayce Police Department, promising that the search will resume promptly. But what led to this sudden shake-up? As of now, it remains a mystery.

Blake’s Brief Tenure

Blake’s hiring was officially announced back in September, and many were hopeful for what he could bring to the position. His previous experiences were noteworthy; he had an impressive background as a law enforcement officer in South Carolina, serving in various capacities including as chief of both the Loris Police Department and the Hendersonville Police Department in North Carolina.

In his resignation letter, Blake expressed gratitude saying, “Thank you very much for the opportunity you afforded me.” But that was about as detailed as it got. With just three sentences to his farewell, the brevity raised several eyebrows among onlookers.

What Happened Before Blake Took Charge?

To put everything into perspective, Chief Blake took over from Chris Cowan, who left for an academic position at the University of South Carolina’s law school. Cowan’s shift was part of a strategic realignment focusing on law enforcement development, but now it seems Cayce is again seeking stability and fresh leadership.

Blake, who is originally from South Carolina, began his career here in the Palmetto State at the Ridgeland Police Department. Following notable experiences in Loris and Hendersonville, he was hired to bring innovation to Cayce. During his introductory press conference, he expressed excitement for the role, stating, “It’s an absolute pleasure to be in a city of this size, proximity, with the goals and objectives that I think is going to move this community forward in a very positive way.”

Details About Pay and Certification

As for Blake’s compensation during his time in Cayce, the city has not divulged specific figures because he was still within a 90-day introductory period. However, during his previous role in Buncombe County, he reportedly received nearly $30,000 in raises over four years, with his last salary clocking in at around $142,935 just before he departed.

Adding to the intrigue, Chief Blake was in the process of being recertified as a South Carolina law enforcement officer after his certification lapsed from his previous role.

Cayce’s Community Stands Strong

Cayce, home to about 14,000 residents, took a bold step in January 2022 by splitting its public safety division to create distinct police and fire departments. The community is expected to rally around its police force during this transition, keeping a watchful eye on the developments ahead.

As the search for a new police chief begins, the citizens of Cayce eagerly await news about who will step up to lead the police department into its next chapter. Until then, the community remains strong, united, and hopeful for a brighter future.
