COLUMBIA, S.C. – Columbia’s Bright New Initiative to Boost Community Connections!
Columbia has some exciting news! The city is stepping up to create opportunities and strengthen ties in areas that need it most. It’s all part of a new initiative that aims to make a real difference, one block at a time. That’s right — block by block! How cool is that?
A Community-Focused Approach
“We are going to partner with our community leaders. We are going to partner with our neighborhood associations. We will make differences in our communities through this initiative,” proclaimed Trevon Fordham, the attentive director of the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement in Columbia.
The city is launching the ‘4 Block’ Promise, which emphasizes working with faith-based partners. These partnerships will help enhance community engagement and build connections in Columbia’s most vulnerable neighborhoods. Pretty heartwarming, right?
Faith and Community Unite
Local leaders will host a variety of community events, volunteer opportunities, and safety collaborations. Fordham candidly shared, “Usually, individuals go in and out of our place of worship, two, three, or four or more times a week. They get refilled. They get recharged. They get to fellowship.” This initiative makes it possible to tap into invaluable connections among people who may not be active in local government meetings but are engaged in their communities every day.
Did you know there are around 1,300 religious institutions in Columbia? That’s a lot of chances to get involved! However, the city is zeroing in on areas with the highest violence rates first, ensuring that outreach comes from local houses of worship within just four blocks.
Positive Trends in Safety
As Mayor Daniel Rickenmann elaborated, “When we know collaborating is working: Crime, violent crimes down. Shootings down. Auto break-ins are down.” And he believes this new initiative is going to enhance that further by concentrating efforts on prevention.
Churches Join Forces
So far, five churches have already jumped on board to provide spaces where community members can gather, connect, and collaborate. Gill Creek Baptist Church is one of the first to sign up, alongside Eau Claire Baptist Church, Temple Zion Baptist Church, and Reformation Lutheran Church.
James Woodley, the senior pastor at Gill Creek, emphasizes the importance of faith-based initiatives coming together for a common good. “We all have some of the same issues, particularly when we look at our communities in and where we serve,” he said.
Addressing Community Challenges
Pastor Woodley pointed out some pressing concerns that people in the community face, including crime, lack of affordable housing, and limited access to grocery stores. He passionately stated, “How can we be an imprint in the community in which we live?” He wants people to associate Gill Creek with positive community actions and services.
These churches have already been active, with community feedings and hurricane relief efforts before joining this new initiative. They are eager to continue making a tangible impact.
A Call to Action
Pastor Woodley summed it up beautifully, declaring that, “We are the hands and feet of the gospel,” adding that actions speak louder than words. “The best sermon is not heard, but the best sermon is seen.” You can feel the enthusiasm radiating from these community leaders!

The city of Columbia is still in the planning stages for this initiative, but leaders will be meeting over the next twelve weeks with faith-based leaders to create action-packed outreach plans. It looks like Columbia is setting the stage for a brighter, more connected future!
