Prepare for a Cold Snap in Columbia!

Columbia, the sun is shining bright today, with highs reaching a pleasant 63°F. However, don’t let those sunny rays fool you because winter is knocking on our doors! This weekend, we’re bracing for some chilly temperatures as the mercury is expected to dip below freezing. Yes, you heard that right—grab your coats and warm hats, folks!

Winter Weather Alert

The National Weather Service has issued a warning for a cold air mass that is moving into the Midlands. According to meteorologist Pierce Larkin, Saturday and Sunday night are expected to see lows tumble into the range of 20°F to 25°F. The bitterly cold mornings will be especially frosty, with the coldest temperatures hitting between 5 AM and 8 AM. So, if you have weekend plans, keep an eye on that thermometer!

Warming Shelters Set to Open

In response to the plunging temperatures, various communities in the Midlands are stepping up to help those in need. The Radius White Knoll church in Lexington is opening its doors this weekend as a warming center. From 7 PM to 7 AM on December 6 and 7, folks are welcome to find refuge from the icy air at 5181 Platt Springs Road. The church is also calling on the community to pitch in with donations, particularly coats and blankets, to ensure that no one has to face the cold alone. What a heartwarming initiative!

In Columbia, the city’s overflow shelter will also open its doors whenever temperatures drop below 40 degrees. The shelter on Calhoun Street will be available this weekend, confirmed media director Justin Stevens. With a capacity of 176 people, it’s a great resource for those who need a warm place to sleep. If you or someone you know could use this service, don’t hesitate to get more information by calling 803-708-4861.

What You Can Do

While the city and local churches work to provide warmth and shelter, it’s also important for everyone to take precautions during this chilly weather. Make sure to layer up, keep your pets indoors, and look out for your neighbors, especially those who may be vulnerable. It’s a great reminder that together, we can face whatever the weather throws our way!

Looking Ahead

As we head into the heart of December, know that winter will be making its presence felt more frequently. It’s a good idea to prepare your home for these colder spells, as well as your vehicles—make sure your antifreeze is topped up and your tires are ready for any icy conditions. Don’t forget to keep those cozy blankets and hot chocolate within reach!

Stay warm out there, Columbia! With some heartfelt community efforts and a little preparation, we can all find ways to handle the chill and celebrate the beauty of our change in seasons. Who knows? We might even spot a snowy wonderland soon if temperatures stay this low!

If you have questions or need assistance regarding warming shelters or other services, don’t hesitate to reach out directly. Let’s all help ensure that everyone in our community stays safe and warm during this winter season.
