Columbia is lighting up the nightlife with the launch of Black Venus Collective, a fresh initiative that’s shaking up the local music scene and creating a welcoming space for the Black community in the city. The Collective, fronted by talented DJs Wandergirl and Kris Love, aims to make dance parties a joyful escape for everyone, one beat at a time.
Weather Forecast: A Cozy Evening for Dance
As Columbia prepared for a night of rhythm and fun on November 22, 2024, the skies were mostly cloudy with a high of 66°F. A bit of patchy fog lingered, perfect for a cozy evening at New Brookland Tavern. Winds were light, and the comfortable temperatures created an inviting atmosphere for those looking to enjoy a night on the dance floor.
A Space for “Healthy Escapism”
Black Venus Collective officially launched in spring 2024, born from the need for a more inclusive nightlife. DJ Wandergirl, also known as Amber Glover, shared her vision: “I really just wanted to create that space just for people to cut loose and have a good time.” She has witnessed a shift in the local club demographics, realizing that the scene often skews mostly White. With this awareness, she and Kris Love decided it was time for a change.
The first event, held on April 5, was an “All Black Affair” that featured various music styles, including House, Afrobeats, and Amapiano. “I was so nervous,” recalls Wandergirl, reflecting on their first performance. But the night turned out to be a hit! “People were dancing and enjoying themselves,” she said with a hint of emotion.
More Than Just Music
What’s truly special about Black Venus Collective is not just the music but the intention behind it. Both Wandergirl and Kris Love emphasize creating a safe space free from the typical pitfalls of nightlife, such as excessive drinking and drug use. Kris, who has experience working security at New Brookland Tavern, reflects on the necessity of safety: “That’s the most important thing, at the end of the night,” he said, ensuring that everyone leaves feeling great.
A Welcoming Community
Many people have found solace in these gatherings, especially in light of recent societal challenges. Wandergirl noted that some attendees feel disconnected or anxious post-pandemic, and this Collective serves as a remedy. “Just to see people come together and enjoy themselves… that really makes me happy that I can provide a space like that,” she expressed passionately.

The Collective’s future looks bright! They plan to expand their roster of DJs, inviting more local musicians to collaborate and share their talents. They aim to continue hosting themed nights and want to keep the tradition of their popular Juneteenth dance party alive.
