Columbia Welcomes Visitors to the Historic Governor’s Mansion This Holiday Season
Columbia, SC – As we roll into the holiday season, there’s no better place to experience a blend of history and seasonal cheer than right here at the South Carolina Governor’s Mansion. Located on the crown of Arsenal Hill, this stunning venue is an architectural gem complete with stories that echo through the years.
A Glimpse Inside the Mansion
The Governor’s Mansion is a site rich in history, dating back to its origins as faculty quarters for the Arsenal Academy, a military training school. This remarkable building, which survived a massive fire during a tumultuous chapter in our history in 1865, has since transformed into the state’s executive residence since 1868. With its 15 beautifully appointed rooms, it offers a peek into the lives of those who once called it home.
Just last week, I had the pleasure of touring the mansion with Michael Budd. Thanks to our reservation, we were granted access through the manicured grounds. A friendly guard checked us in, and soon enough, we found ourselves in the grand drawing room, eagerly waiting for our guide.
Meet the Governor, If You’re Lucky!
While we were there, we got a surprise encounter with none other than Governor Henry McMaster himself! As he made his way down from the private quarters, we exchanged a brief, yet friendly greeting. If you’re hoping for a chance to shake hands with the Governor, mark your calendars for December 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. During the upcoming Christmas Open House, the Governor will be on hand to greet visitors, all while enjoying delicious refreshments!
A Tour with a Twist
Our tour was led by the knowledgeable and engaging Susan Aude, a familiar face to many as a former WIS-TV news anchor. Her love for the mansion was contagious as she guided us through the public areas that are accessible most weeks, from Tuesday to Thursday. You can really sense the history as you wander through the spaces where countless significant events took place.
Did you know that the mansion is home to a drawing room where Strom Thurmond held his first wedding in 1947? Aiken folks surely have a soft spot for this particular room, which is just one of the many highlights in our rich South Carolina history.
Art and Music in Every Corner
As you step into the mansion, don’t miss the stunning Steinway grand piano donated by Governor James Byrnes. This isn’t just any piano; Leonard Bernstein himself once played it late into the night! Music has clearly played a significant role in the mansion’s life, and it’s incredible to think of the great artists and leaders who have crossed its threshold.
Feeling Nostalgic?
Walking through the mansion is like taking a stroll down memory lane for many South Carolinians. The walls are lined with portraits of former governors, both past and present, including Richard Riley, Mark Sanford, and the ever-popular Nikki Haley. Each room tells a different chapter of our state’s story, and carefully curated pieces on display allow visitors to connect deeply with our history.
