Columbia Welcomes TMF and The Whispers for a Musical Tribute

Columbia, SC, prepare yourselves for an unforgettable night of music on November 22, 2024. The Township Auditorium will be graced by the smooth sounds of TMF (The Music First) and legendary vocal group The Whispers as they come together to pay tribute to the iconic Frankie Beverly. If you’re a fan of R&B, this is one show you won’t want to miss!

Celebrating a Legend

Let’s get one thing straight: TMF is not just another tribute band. They embody the essence of the beloved R&B group, Maze, which was famously led by the late Frankie Beverly. Beverly, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 77, gifted the world with timeless hits such as “Before I Let Go,” “Joy & Pain,” and “We Are One.” With TMF stepping onto the stage, his vibrant legacy will continue to thrive.

The Band Reimagined

Now, you might be wondering how a band can carry on without a frontman as legendary as Beverly. Surprise! TMF is packed with original members who have been part of the Maze family for decades. Roam Lowry, the band’s percussionist, has been with the group since day one—you heard it right, that’s a whopping 55 years! Keyboardist Vance Taylor joined in 2003, and bass player Bear Williams has been around almost as long as well. This trio forms the heart of the group, and they’re ready to deliver a night that feels authentic and full of energy.

New Talent, Same Vibes

So who’s taking over those iconic vocals? That would be the talented Chris Walker. Walker is no stranger to the music scene; his credits include working with artists ranging from free-jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman to the renowned Al Jarreau. “I’ve been a huge fan of Maze featuring Frankie Beverly for so many years,” Walker shares, “and to have this opportunity to honor his legacy is both a challenge and a dream come true.”

Musical Magic in the Making

During the show at Township, you can expect not just a trip down memory lane with Maze classics but also some exciting new tracks! TMF has recently released their debut album, The Music First, Vol. 1, and fan response has been overwhelmingly positive, with singles like “Let Me Love You” and “Making Love to the Music” climbing the charts. “It was a magical time,” Roam said, reflecting on the experience of putting the album together. “We all adjusted quickly and the tunes came together in just a couple of takes!”

A Personal Touch

For Roame, performing these treasured tracks without Beverly feels bittersweet. “He was my best friend,” he reminisces. “I knew him since 1969, and I know he’d want us to carry on his love and legacy through our music.” The emotional weight of honoring Frankie Beverly is something that all members of TMF feel deeply as they step into their new chapter.

Join the Celebration!

This special event is set to kick off at 8 p.m. at the Township Auditorium, and ticket prices range from $69 to $150. If you’re ready to groove and celebrate the music that has defined generations, be sure to grab your tickets now at thetownship.org.

So mark your calendars and ready your dancing shoes—Columbia is about to experience a night filled with magic and music as we celebrate the timeless hits of Maze and the shimmering voices of The Whispers!
