Columbia Gears Up for a Night of Soulful Tribute with TMF and The Whispers!

Get ready, Columbia! The Township Auditorium is buzzing with excitement as the iconic band TMF (The Music First) teams up with the sensational group The Whispers for a night dedicated to the legendary Frankie Beverly. Mark your calendars for November 22, 2024, because this is one event you won’t want to miss!

A Tribute Like No Other

First, let’s clarify something important: TMF is not just any tribute band. While they do honor the silky smooth sounds of Maze, the famous R&B group formerly led by the late Frankie Beverly, TMF is, in fact, a continuation of that musical heritage. Beverly, who left us earlier this year at the age of 77, set the bar exceptionally high with classics like “Before I Let Go,” “Joy & Pain,” and “We Are One” – songs that helped Maze score an impressive nine gold albums.

After his passing, many wondered how Maze would continue without such an extraordinary frontman. But never count out a group with deep roots in musical talent. This new version of the band, TMF, is bringing that same grown-and-sexy soul and gritty R&B to the stage.

A Talented Lineup

So, who’s stepping into Beverly’s shoes as vocalist? The extremely talented Chris Walker will be taking the mic, and he’s no stranger to the music world. Having collaborated with icons like Ornette Coleman and Al Jarreau, Walker considers it an honor to be a part of this new chapter. “I’ve been a huge fan of Maze featuring Frankie Beverly for so many years,” he shared, looking back on fond memories of meeting Beverly when he was just 19.

But let’s not forget the remarkable musicians who make up TMF. Percussionist Roam Lowry, who has been with the band for an astounding 55 years, is ecstatic about hitting the road again. “The one thing I love doing most is performing,” Roam exclaimed. Along with keyboardist Vance Taylor and bass player Bear Williams, they form the ensemble’s core, giving it authenticity and that signature Maze feel!

A New Collection of Songs

Expect to hear those beloved Maze hits when TMF takes the stage at 8 p.m., but hold on! We’ll also be treated to fresh tracks from their debut album, released earlier this year. The album, titled “The Music First, Vol. 1,” showcases new singles like the upbeat “Let Me Love You” and the swoon-worthy “Making Love To The Music.”

Roam describes the process of creating this album as “magical,” emphasizing how quickly they adjusted to working as a unit again. With older members sharing fond memories and newcomers soaking in the vibe, it’s no wonder they’re excited to show audiences what they’ve been cooking up!

Remembering Frankie Beverly

It’s impossible to look back on this journey without mentioning the man who started it all. Roam considers Frankie not just a bandmate but his “best friend,” as they shared a bond that spanned over five decades. “We’re going to continue to share his legacy and his love, as I know he would want us to do,” Roam said, highlighting the mission behind this tribute.
