Parkersburg Prepares for Key Matchup Against Huntington
Parkersburg — This Friday, Parkersburg High School’s football team will take on Huntington in what promises to be an exciting game at Stadium Field. This matchup marks the 29th meeting between these two teams as members of the Mountain State Athletic Conference, with both now competing in Class AAAA.
The No. 4 ranked Highlanders, led by coach Billy Seals, come into the game with a strong record of 7 wins and 1 loss, riding a six-game winning streak. In contrast, the Big Reds currently sit at No. 16 with a record of 3 wins and 5 losses.
“It’s a great challenge. A really good football team, really well coached,” commented Parkersburg’s coach, Matt Kimes. “They create problems for you, but we’re excited about the challenge too, because with a great challenge comes a great opportunity.”
The last time Parkersburg defeated Huntington was back in 2020. Coach Kimes knows that to have a chance, his team needs to play to their capabilities. The key to victory will likely come from their ability to perform in all areas of the game — offense, defense, and special teams.
The Big Reds showcased some strong defensive skills last week, highlighted by a significant pick-six from linebacker Zane Lewis during their win against St. Albans. Lewis is currently one of the top tacklers on the team, numbering 56 tackles, just behind team leader Devin Widman with 69 tackles. On the offensive side, Jakel Shelton leads the way with 684 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns this season.
Parkersburg will also welcome back Sylas Cheuvront, adding depth to their linebacker and tailback positions. Coach Kimes noted that they are healthier now than at any point this season.
As the Big Reds prepare for their upcoming matchup, their focus will be on maintaining possession of the ball, sustaining drives, and converting crucial third downs. “If we can do those things and keep the ball out of their hands, then I think we can keep it close,” added Kimes.
The showdown between Parkersburg and Huntington is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, and both teams will be preparing hard for this thrilling encounter.
