The special event took place at the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort, highlighting the extraordinary contributions of athletes and coaches connected to Broward County.
The inductees for 2024 included athletes and coaches from various sports backgrounds. Elliot Bonner, recognized for his long-standing career as a football and baseball coach in Broward County, has mentored many young athletes over the past 50 years. Meanwhile, Darius Butler, a former NFL cornerback and safety, earned his spot in the hall for his impressive sports career and current role as a sports personality. Other notable inductees were Abbas Karimi, a celebrated paralympic swimmer, Diana Nyad, a legendary long-distance swimmer, and Steve Shapiro, a renowned sports anchor.
The evening kicked off with a cocktail reception and silent auction aimed at benefiting the Broward Education Foundation, who organized the event. James A. Knapp, President and CEO of the foundation, expressed the significance of this year’s class, stating, “Their legacy serves as an inspiration to both our students and the broader community.”
Lexi Thompson, a standout professional golfer, was also honored. Known for her achievements on the LPGA tour, she is a powerful role model for young athletes. Lastly, the Hollywood Hills High School 1973 State 4A Championship Football Team was celebrated for their trailblazing role in uniting students through sports during a pivotal time in history.
This year marks a significant moment, as it is the first time in six years that the Broward County Sports Hall of Fame ceremony has taken place. Shawn Cerra, the Director of Broward Education Foundation Athletics, praised the community for supporting the revival of this celebration. The inductees will be memorialized on the Hall of Fame Honor Wall at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida, ensuring their legacy continues to inspire future generations.
