Columbia Celebrates 10th Annual JerryFest with Music, Art, and Community Spirit

Perfect Weather Sets the Stage

Columbia woke up to a foggy morning on October 6, 2024, but as the day went on, everything transformed into a beautiful and mostly sunny afternoon with temperatures reaching a delightful 87°F. This year’s weather was perfect for attending the highly anticipated 10th annual JerryFest, a hallmark of community spirit and celebration of the legendary Grateful Dead frontman, Jerry Garcia.

Another Year, Another Success in Five Points

For the tenth consecutive year, the vibrant neighborhood of Five Points buzzed with excitement as locals and visitors gathered for JerryFest. What started as a small gathering of friends in the wake of Garcia’s passing in 1995 has blossomed into a major festival, attracting people of all ages and backgrounds.

The festival kicked off in various local bars before finally finding its permanent home in Five Points in 2014. It was brought to life by the spirited collaboration of Loose Lucy’s owners Jenn and Don McCallister along with the Five Points Association. Since then, the festival has been a joyful celebration of music, art, and community.

Headliner and Local Talent

This year, the festival featured the long-awaited return of the well-loved jam band New Potato Caboose, who hadn’t performed in Columbia in nearly 40 years. “Back in the 80s, these guys used to come to a club called Greenstreets,” said Don McCallister during his introduction of the band. The band brought nostalgia as attendees reminisced about their past performances while making new memories at the same time.

The lineup was diverse and entertaining, with performances from notable acts like JGBCB, Machine Funk, and the Grateful Brothers. The lively atmosphere was enhanced by the presence of local acts, including Ten Mile Ride and the Columbia Drum Circle, engaging the crowd in spirited revelries.

Art Unveiling: Meet Fritz!

Alongside the fantastic music, another highlight of the day was the unveiling of the newest art piece in Five Points. Local artist Clark Ellefson introduced his latest creation, a vibrant and whimsical sculpture, aptly named “Fritz”. This large, headphone-wearing bearded giant is located on Saluda Avenue near the fountain, and the name was chosen as part of a fun social media contest run by the Five Points Association. Executive Director Heather McDonald shared her enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing how it represents the area’s creativity and music culture.

A Day Full of Fun and Community

As JerryFest continued, attendees enjoyed not just the music, but also a variety of fun activities and local vendors. The festival showcased a fantastic selection of craft vendors, scrumptious food trucks, and a unique pinball experience from Bang Back Pinball Lounge. Kids and families delighted in the Lil’ Hippie Corner, bursting with crafts and tie-dye activities, adding to the community vibe.

The festival not only serves as an annual tribute to Jerry Garcia but also highlights the amazing talents and creativity that Columbia has to offer, strengthening the bond between friends, families, and neighbors.

As the sun began to set on this beautiful day, the spirit of JerryFest lingered in the air, filled with music, laughter, and the unmistakable joy of community celebration. Here’s to many more years of JerryFest and the incredible memories yet to come!
